Networking Sites

Networking is a critical part of searching for a job or internship. It’s a process of creating relationships that can lead to new opportunities. The Georgetown Hoya network is invaluable, but you have other networks to cultivate as well. Do your family members know anyone who works where you might want to work? Does your undergraduate university have an alumni club in Washington where you could meet new people? If you are an international student, does your embassy offer social events where you might meet people? If you are open to meeting new people—in class, on the bus, in the grocery store, at a conference, at a baseball game, just about anywhere—your chances of learning about new opportunities increase dramatically.

Increasingly, people are using social networking sites to find job and internship leads. Make sure you have a professional presence online because this, too, could lead to new connections. Here is a small sampling of networking groups in the Washington area.

  • LinkedIn is a social and career networking community that allows users to find jobs or potential employees, consultants and business partners. LinkedIn Jobs allows users to search job listings and connect with hiring managers and recruiters. Scroll through the list of LinkedIn networking groups to find those that specifically interest you. Join the SFS Career Center’s LinkedIn group and the groups associated with your program.

Georgetown Networks

  • Hoya Gateway is one of the most unique career services programs in the nation. The Georgetown community beyond the Healy Gates is eager to offer their expertise and help you develop your professional network. This program, designed with students’ needs in mind, strives to match alumni volunteers with students for in-person, career-related conversations in the form of an informational interview, mock interview, or resume review. Hoya Gateway alumni volunteers are passionate about helping students discover and explore career opportunities beyond the Hilltop. Whether you are interested in learning about a specific career path, various career paths, or preparing for a competitive interview, Hoya Gateway offers an invaluable opportunity to learn from generations of Hoyas.
  • Georgetown University DC/Alumni Club provides the Hoya community with diverse events, volunteer activities and professional networking opportunities whether you are a first-year student or graduated long ago.
  • Georgetown Alumni Online is a great way to keep in touch with other Hoyas and to find out what’s happening in the Georgetown community around the world. You can catch up on the latest Georgetown news or find the alumni club nearest you. If you no longer remember your netID and password, request an account or password reset.

International Development & Affairs

  • Society for International Development (SID) is a global forum of individuals and institutions concerned with sustainable economic, social and political development.
  • Young Professionals in Foreign Policy is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization committed to fostering the next generation of foreign policy leadership.
  • Peace, Collaboration, and Development Network is the go-to hub for the global change making community.  PCDN is a rapidly growing social enterprise that gathers over 35,500 professionals, organizations and students engaged in social change, peace-building, social entrepreneurship, development and related fields.

Intelligence Industry Networks

  • AFCEA Emerging Professionals in Intelligence Committee (EPIC) is an exciting, high-energy group focused on developing leaders, networking, and giving back to the Intelligence Community (IC). The committee, comprising IC professionals ages 40 and under from both the public and private sectors, enhances AFCEA’s outreach and education to the IC. The committee is an extension of the longstanding and highly regarded AFCEA Intelligence Committee.
  • Intelligence and National Security Alliance (INSA) provides a nonpartisan forum for collaboration between the public, private, and academic sectors of the intelligence and national security communities that bring together committed experts in and out of government to identify, develop, and promote practical and creative solutions to national security problems.

Private Sector Focused

  • NetImpact is a nonprofit membership organization for students and professionals interested in using business skills in support of various social and environmental causes.
  • The Washington Network Group is a networking organization of professionals dedicated to help WNG members advance their business objectives by convening networking events and educational forums. Activities are organized across five Roundtables: International, Technology, Government, Communications, and Entrepreneur.

Women’s Networks

  • The Association of Women in International Trade (WIIT) is a professional association of members who share an interest and expertise in international trade. Our members are engaged in a variety of international trade careers, including business, U.S. and foreign government and non-profit organizations.
  • Women in Government Relations, Inc. (WGR) is a non-profit, non-partisan government relations associations in the Washington metropolitan area. WGR’s over 750 members include women and men at all professional levels representing corporations, trade associations and professional societies, law firms, lobbying firms, non-profit groups, and federal, state and local governments.
  • The Women’s Foreign Policy Group (WFPG) is an independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit, educational membership organization that promotes global engagement and the leadership, visibility, and participation of women in international affairs.
  • Women In International Security (WIIS) is a global network actively advancing women’s leadership in the international peace and security field.
